"You can do this!" Those are the exact words spoken to us many times through this hardship of a 10 mile walk through rough terrain. Our Eagle Pass HS Eagles of the Practicum course banded together with the C.C. Winn Mavericks to endure possibly the longest walk of our lives at Seminole Canyon State Park. Throughout the trip, students were tasked with capturing their experience through film, photography, written poems or essays, even sketching and painting. Below are works done by our very own students that have decided to showcase their own creations! ArtworksNicole Isabella MeryOur very own Starry Night, Seminole Canyon style! Of course, kidding but our own Nicole Mery has decided to travel back in time and show us a completely different way of life before our time. Her work shows a pleasing view of a night sky with indigenous people illustrating their lives to us at Seminole Canyon. Sayra MatuSayra Matu has decided to dwell deep into her work. With the thought of the many souls that traveled through the area and the stories that will be going untold in the canyon's air, she came up with this piece of art. PhotoGRaphsLEONARDO CASAS Our student, Leonardo Casas took his time to capture moments from our trip in a simple, aesthetic way of his own. He even managed to capture our own Practicum teachers, Mr. Sanchez and Mr. Fuentes enjoying the view. If you want to see more of Leonardo's work, click here to see more! Made by Ileana Fernandez, Sean Hernandez, and Dani Hernandez here is a skit they filmed on our trip to show some tips to 'Understand Nature!' Another of our vlogs done by also Ileana Fernandez, Sean Hernandez, and Dari Hernandez where they give a closer inside look into the Seminole Canyon Experience. WritingSean HernandezBelow is a written easy by Sean Hernandez who gives us his opinions and feelings given during our trip. Comfort is something we all take for granted. Flipping the pillow to the cool side, turning off the AC, eating whatever we want whenever we want. For our ancestors, luxuries like these were not as accessible. They were out living in the wilderness under the blaring hot sun amongst the vicious wild animals that roamed the land. Recently, our EPHS audio/video class and the audio/video class from CCWINN took a trip to a place called Seminole Canyon, a place in West Texas where different groups of humanoids once lived and thrived. For us, the trip was more than just an interesting spot. It was also a really challenging hike considering most of us spend time indoors sitting down at computers for a grade. To start off, we got a look at the cool artifacts and small models of how our ancestors used to live. We saw small depictions of how they used to hunt big game in groups with weapons like spears and bows. We also saw jewelry they made and kept to wear. The clothes they wore just simply were prolific. After the tour of their artifacts and depictions, we went outside to see the actual location they lived in. We started off on what seemed like the top of a hill and as we went down to a small canyon ravine, we noticed how steep the steps were. The stairs were not only small, but they were also really tall and traversing these stairs was a workout! When we got down to the ravine, there were small puddles, there was marking on the rock wall but most importantly there was a big overhang in the wall of the canyon. Inside the overhang was a build up of black material; this turned out to be charred remains of what was once a fireplace for someone. However, these remains made up the majority of the floor in the overhang which the tour guide said demonstrated that this was the site for fireplaces for more than one person, perhaps hundreds! After we took our picture in this overhang we moved onto the real canyon. This journey was one that would prove to be challenging to many of us, myself included. We set out to see the big river in Seminole Canyon which took about an hour to reach our resting spot and what made it the most challenging was the fact that the distance wasn’t long. The route was just shaped like a zig-zag so we ended up walking more than we really needed to. Along the way we all saw small insects, lizards, ants, eagles, etc. Treaching out into the wilderness many of us began to fight the urge to rest. However, doing this alongside other students whether from EPHS or CCWINN was what made it a bonding experience. We understood each other and felt stronger when walking alongside each other. The river was so wide and serene. We had our food and some time to rest and just stare at the grand view. Getting back to the bus was crazy, I don’t remember being tired or anything. I just went through the motion of walking ahead. On the bus, many of us simply wanted rest and at the restaurant we all laughed at the obstacle we had faced that day. Some people couldn’t even bring themselves to eat! They just took a nap in their chair at the restaurant. On the way back, we were all tired but felt as if this new experience had been done for a good reason. It not only exposed us to a new environment, specifically one that our ancestors inhabited, but it exposed us to new groups of people who, like us, share a love for capturing the essence that a certain environment exhibits. -Sean Hernandez Bruno Lara Below is a written essay by our own Bruno Lara who gives us his thoughts of the trip over all. What was Seminole Canyon supposed to be? It was meant to be a team building opportunity that would have brought the participating EPHS practicum media crew closer together. We were intended to suffer, but as a collective. To share an experience is one of life’s greatest gifts and blessing that rings true throughout all points in life. Seminal Canyon was supposed to be one of those golden moments where you could experience sweat, pain, heat, exhaustion, and struggle with people you might not be able to see in those situations sitting class together. It would have given me another perspective of the people I see everyday and hardly share more than a sly remark or a courteous hello. Seminole Canyon would have been a wonderful experience to have shared with those I consider friends, but I did not. I did not see anyone smile, sweat, or tire. I did not hear anyone cry out in pain, complain about the heat, or stop for a break. I did not have a meaningful moment with my fellow peers that would have given me a shared joy, pain, nor memory. I was alone. I was ahead of the group on my own selfish choice. All the things I should have experienced with others, I shared with myself. I missed out on a once in a lifetime experience because I wanted to be alone. How sad is that? I thought that by riding myself from the daily faces I could escape from any reminders of the stressful weeks and mundane daily routines. I thought that that indulging in nature to rejuvenate the spirit was a solitary activity. I was in a self-centered mind space thinking only about what I could get out of the trip instead of what I could share from the trip with those I see everyday. However, I did manage to share the one crucial element. The canyon. No matter where I was, either a few feet ahead of the group or at the end of the trail, I was able to admire the same beautiful rocky murals that line the canyon walls. The towering layers of history that a civilization before us hunted and lived by, were now also witnessed by my fellow peers and me. The unique energy that fills my group’s lungs as they walked over the cracks and crevices on the high walls of sedimentary rock was the same energy that reverberated in my lungs. And at the end of the trail, I got to share a meal with the group by the edge of the great stone walls and admire the amazing view of the canyon’s turquoise river. Am I still disappointed in my choice to miss out on potentially wonderful memories with the people I see the most? Yes I am but the more I think about it, my Seminole Canyon trip was in a way a wake up call; a call to action, encouraging me to look at those besides me and pay attention to the opportunities that could allow us to share a memory together. Thank You!!We went through harsh terrain but still came out on top. The sights? Truly breathtaking. The rivalry? Completely gone. This trip sparked up true friendships and great memories that we truly won't forget. I hope I did a good job in keeping the memories archived in the internet to someday, maybe a few years from now we can all look back through it. Eagle Pass High School Practicum class wants to thank Mr. Fuentes for giving us the chance to experience this trip. We wish you the best in your future endeavors and thank you dearly for the years you gave of teaching to the program. That is it for now, Eagles! Thank you for reading; bye!
