Now imagine the effect of a mural in a classroom. With the help and guidance of audio/video production teacher Francisco Sanchez who understands and advocates for creative communication through visual art, students in the audio/video production class at Eagle Pass High School began production of a collaborative mural. This project was a combined effort of many talented individuals including Kelly Alvarez as lead design artist with Annayram and Maryanna Garcia as supporting artists. The mural aimed to encapsulate the synergetic culture and environment of the audio/video classroom while also tying in various representative elements of the city of Eagle Pass and our neighbor city Piedras Negras. To encapsulate the journey, the entire proccess from start to finish was documented though the photos, videos, and videoblogs included in this article. The design process:The actual design spent a lot of time on paper before being made into a reality. But even before anything was sketched out, a considerable period of brainstorming took place. This included gathering references for the art style and inspiration photos for elements to be included in the design. The main inspiration for the stick figure art style was found in an art book called Illustration Now! from art made by Laurent Cilluffo. Gaining inspiration from that, Annayram began designing customized versions of the stick figures that would later be used in the final product. Photos of the classroom and city were collected to be used as references in the sketch. Multiple rough drafts were sketched out before settling on the final artwork. Then to add more life to the sketch, a color pallet was chosen and incorporated into the design. After a long period of planning, sketching, and rearranging the design, it was ready to paint. EXECUTION:The time had finally come to buy the supplies and get to work. Supplies were purchased using money raised by the audio/video club through fundraising projects and events. It takes a whole team of dedicated individuals to produce art at such a massive scale, which is why this mural was the product of over twenty students working in collaboration over a span of several months. It took the involvement of multiple students to clear out desks, sand the wall, fill holes, tape around the edges, and prime to the wall in preparation for the mural. Then the students began sketching. The design was projected against the wall for easier tracing. During the sketching process, some of the figures were customized to represent some of the people who contributed to the mural. This included artists Annayram, Maryanna, and Kelly as well as audio/video teacher Francisco Sanchez. Once the design was traced in pencil, the artists could begin the painting process. A high level of dedication was put in by all who participated. Students found time to paint during class, during their free class periods and lunch time, and even dedicated time after school to work on the mural. In spirit of the audio/video program, the entire process was documented and compiled into a series of videos published on the Eagle Pass HS Media YouTube channel. conclusion:This mural is a reflection of the audio/video community and could not have been complete without the hard work and creative energy put forth by multiple talented individuals working in collaboration. A huge thank you to those who stuck around throughout the entire process from the brainstorming stage to the moment it was all complete. And of course this mural could not have been possible without the encouragement and support within the audio/video community led by audio/video production teacher Francisco Sanchez. If you or anyone you know has a passion for art, photography, cinematography, animation, music production, journalism, or radio, please consider joining the audio/video production program! We admire and promote creativity of all forms and would love to have you as part of our crew to help create more projects such as this. He was the host for the podcast series “Project Mayhem” and was the writer, director, and producer for Eagle Pass television. After high school, Dean attended college at San Antonio to study radio, television, and broadcasting. He is currently attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Dean is in the process of producing an independent film called “For the Love of the Game.” In the film, Dean interviews people from the vintage clothing community in Lubbock, Texas. A group of them gather at one location to sell not only clothing, but valuable pieces with meaning and history. In today’s generation, vintage fashion is becoming more recognized to teenagers and young adults. Dean captures the stories behind what led these passionate vendors to do what they do. Youtube: Facebook: Instagram: OVERALL REVIEW AND AV CLASSAs someone interested in the fashion industry, I could understand why they chose to bring these vintage clothing back to life. While fast fashion is an easy and cheap way to buy clothing, it isn’t as meaningful as one unique piece you could find at a thrift store. Fashion, in my opinion, is one of the most important ways a person can express who they are, and with vintage clothing, you could tell when someone has an appreciation for the colorful days. In the AV class, one could express themselves fully with no judgment. We work together to create something significant, whether it be a project, an event, or even just bonding and communicating. To have every individual be completely unique but also very alike with an interest in art and media, is something that not any regular class could gather. Dean is just one of many students who have achieved something great by following his interest and participating in any chance he got to show his skills. “For the Love of the Game” will capture his talent in the media while also sending a valuable message to the world.
