The only reliable radio station in Eagle Pass, GONE. Like many others, our radio station was affected by two factors: the gloomy state of the economy and the modern shift from radio to streaming services. Lately, with the growth of music service apps such as Spotify and Pandora, people are becoming strangers to communal forms of media such as commercial radio and public broadcasting. KEPS played a role in the preservation of the community’s Mexican roots by playing old and new hits of our native language which gave us a window to our neighbor city across the border, Piedras Negras, Mexico. KINL showed us American top pop hits and kept the public up to date with current events through daily news reports and public service announcements. With the death of KINL-KEPS, many other things went with it. A section in the Eagle Pass High School media tech class gave students the opportunity to host and learn more about how the radio station worked and why it was important. With the loss of KINL-KEPS, students not only lost the opportunity to meet the person behind the mic but also the opportunity to connect with the people who listen from behind the wheel of their car, in their office listening at work, or anyone else who chose to listen from any location, to listen to us, to listen to OUR PEOPLE.
for themselves in the public eye. Similarly, many small businesses were given the opportunity to promote and sell their products on KEPS’ Compro y Vendo (Buy and Sell) section. Businesses and performers provided content for the radio station in exchange for public exposure. With the death of KINL-KEPS, this transaction of mutually beneficial communal efforts disappeared. The community of Eagle Pass is taking the biggest punch. The loss of this staple radio station has our community media gasping for air. The element of communication within our community is diminishing as the death of KINL-KEPS, a primary source of communication, has created a greater distance within the community. The more the element of communication among our people is hurt, the more our culture withers. What else are we willing to lose? Written and Published by: Ivy Estrada - Eagle Public Radio writer
