With Senior year coming to an end, the practicum students make a final trip to the KINL/KEPS radio station. This heartfelt message was sent over the radio waves for everyone to hear. The students thank everyone who has gotten them to that point, and even share what the future holds for them. On behalf of the A/V graduating class of 2018, Thank You.
CTE Day brings different passions together, and 2018 was no different. Students from EPJH and OLOR visited our campus to explore electives they can take in their up coming years. This year, the CTE department made it extra special. With a carnival fair theme, different stations represented different clusters. From law enforcement to cosmetology, there was something for everyone. This video highlights all of the different career paths student can take at EPHS.
The annual visit to the radio station went well, and with it, there is a batch of knowledge that is passed down. Senior and Practicum student Dean Contreras shares how to work the hard/software & interviewing on air. He also covers what it is like to host, and be a part of the radio station.
Written by Regina Seáñez and edited by Agustin Lopez and Jason Lopez One of our former Practicum students, Alyssa Perales, recently submitted one of her works into an online promotional contest for Disney’s newest film, A Wrinkle In Time. The contest required the applicants to share their creativity and their storytelling voice. The winner would be awarded $100,000 for supplies to create their own film, a trip to Hollywood for the premier of A Wrinkle In Time, and a new 2018 Nissan Leaf. Last year, she presented her first stop motion animation film to a contest in New York, and was one of the few that were selected to have their film shown on the big screen. We had the chance to interview Alyssa on her big accomplishments. For the "A Wrinkle In Time" Contest Alyssa had watched a trailer for the competition that was started by Ava DuVernay, the director of the film, and Oprah Winfrey, who stars in the movie. “I’ve loved Disney for so long, and working for them is one of many end goals I have in mind in terms of my career,” she said. “So I was more than ecstatic at this announcement.” As mentioned before, Alyssa has experience creating stop motion films. She commented about her future plans as a director and film producer. She hopes to continue with stop motion then transition to live action filming, where she will work with other people. “Well, the same situation happened again,” she replied when asked why she did stop animation again. “It was a very busy time of year for me. I was coordinating things for Drama Club, our One-Act Play, participating in about three organizations… I had way too many prior commitments to expect a whole film crew to adhere to my narrow schedule.” Editing Because of her tight schedule, she wouldn’t have much time to film and edit if a crew was involved. It was stressful enough that she only had a two-week timeframe to submit everything on time, so she had to work hard and efficiently. “Any idle time was spent cutting/pasting, taking photos or editing,” Alyssa explained. “At all hours of the day, I did not stop except to do homework or help the other clubs I was part of. It turned out to be beneficial, as I had already gone through that situation once before. By the second time around, I moved between stages of production more fluently.” Alyssa never felt like giving up. Everytime she felt tired, she kept remembering a voice in her head saying, “Ava DuVernay, Ava DuVernay..” for inspiration. Finals She admits to being a little confused after recovering from the initial shock, when she discovered she was one of the 20 semi finalists, for there were more than a thousand entries. “Maybe I’m doing something right,” she had said to herself. “And it’s not just a one-time fluke.” Alyssa believes that getting that recognition gave her a stronger sense of confidence. She figured that if Disney liked the way she told the story, her narration, along with her visuals, she would keep going. “I have a shot at something great.” Seeing her stop motion and her face, along with hearing her voice in a Disney promo was “disorienting in the best way.” Alyssa said that she knew she was going to make a small cameo in the promo, but it didn’t stop the shock that she had when she saw the video. In The Future She is willing to take part in more competitions, if they come up. However, right now, she is focusing on films just for personal fulfillment. Alyssa tells us that as of now, she has one work in progress and others are being written. “I’m focusing on creating for myself,” she said. “And I’ll slowly release finished projects for everyone to see.” She is encouraging students who are interested in film making or in the Media Tech Program to take their own creative route, to listen to the creative voice they have in their head and to never let themselves stray. Alyssa believes that if you feel strongly about your passion, execute that vision you have. Don’t let others’ opinions on your work affect you, and don’t let them change your mind on what you want to do. She says students don’t need her advice. They are creative enough on their own with their own ideas. They just need to put in practice. “Have confidence in yourself and your work,” Alyssa said. “The rest will fall into place.” Alyssa's work is featured: Her video - 27-28sec. mark Her voice 40-45sec. mark Herself - 50-54sec. mark. You can view the view the video on the A Wrinkle In Time Challenge website. For specific programs, please click on any of the hyperlinks below.
