Information About The Class
Eagle Pass High School gives students interested in the cinematography field the opportunity to advance in their studies. Our audio video program serves as basic training to start them off in their career. Students are given the knowledge they need to prepare for a career in the audio/video world. One of our advanced students had the chance to travel to New York City to have one of her animations premiered on the big screen. We had the opportunity to interview her and ask about her experience throughout the whole event.
Process
Perales started producing two weeks before the deadline. She drew every character and their facial expressions, along with every item in the video. “I had three months to prepare and I didn’t do anything for that time,” she admitted. Her time was running out and she knew that. She started to panic (no pun intended) about not having enough time. “I didn’t think I could finish it in two weeks,” Perales said. “Since it was summer, I would wake up at either seven or eight in the morning and I would not stop filming until one in the morning.” Perales didn’t stop recording unless it was to eat or go to the restroom. She admitted that it was stressing her out, but mentioned that all that stress kept pushing her to do more. “It got to the point where I kept animating for so long that I got tired of it and I would take longer breaks,” she laughed. She filmed everything on her iPhone and had to improvise when she didn’t have a tripod. She used a bookshelf as a tripod and was careful to not move anything while she was changing the motion of the characters. Perales edited her video on Adobe Premier that she downloaded on her laptop.
Being Selected
Perales mentioned that she never thought she would get selected, especially after watching those videos who were already selected from the past years. “I was basically preparing myself for not getting in,” she said truthfully. “So the day the results would come in, I made it, like, a nice day for me. I made my sister make cupcakes with me and chill until the results came in.” She awaited for the results all day, but her hopes went down when she didn’t receive anything. Nothing had come in yet and it was already past the time the announcers would’ve selected. “They even had a livestream to announce the selected ones,” Perales said. “I couldn’t even get it to work so it frustrated me. But they hadn’t sent anything at that time so I just accepted the fact that I didn’t get chosen.” It was already midnight when she refreshed her email account and noticed that she got an email from those who were hosting the contest. Perales brought her hopes back down when she told herself that it was probably a rejection letter. However, it wasn’t like that. The email stated that she had indeed been selected. “I screamed,” she said when she was asked about her reaction. “My sister was just like ‘what are you screaming about?’ I texted my parents and asked them to buy plane tickets to New York ASAP.”
Screening
Perales stayed in New York for three days with her aunt that lives in Brooklyn. She had already been to New York during the summer, but the city still amazed her because everything was so big. “It felt different,” she said. “It wasn’t for vacation this time, it was for my achievement.” The screening and award show were separate days. She walked into the screening theater and was amazed and intimidated by all the high school kids who walked around with professional equipment. Her video was shown second to the last. She admitted that she was nervous because of how good the other videos were, and she doesn’t like to witness when other people watch her videos. “People in the audience liked it,” Perales said. “Kids that I didn’t know liked it. Everyone was so into the dramatic ending, well throughout all of it.”
She went through the process of producing because she has wanted to be a director, but never had a major project to work on. Now that this had come up, she found the opportunity to go for it.
“It was because of my own competitive nature,” Perales pointed out. She has agreed to keep making these videos and plans to begin her Youtube channel (which she already has) to upload said videos. “If other competitions come up I’m definitely going to enter again,” she said. “If I can find people to be actors in my next film then I’ll probably do that.” Perales is very proud of where she’s come with her video, and hopes that she can continue to make better, well-produced projects.
